It doesn’t really matter if you like skateboarding or not, THPS 1 + 2 remains an incredibly fun game regardless. It’s a ground up remake of two of the greatest games ever made, and in true Vicarious Visions fashion, it’s excellent. Sure, it’s not really an original game, but that doesn’t really matter if you ask me. For the life of me, I can’t think of a single bad thing about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. You’ve probably noticed that I haven’t really talked about negatives in this article, and you aren’t wrong. And let’s be honest, any game with Rage Against the Machine’s Guerrilla Radio on its soundtrack is going to get a glowing recommendation from me one way or the other. And they’re bolstered by some new tracks that manage to hit the same vibe as the original games, so the music’s never going to feel out of place. Sadly, the entirety of the original OST didn’t make the jump, but we do still have most of it largely intact. Sure, game design has changed quite a bit over the years, and largely for the better, but there’s something to be said for the purity of classic arcade-styled games that makes them age incredibly well.Īnd then there’s the soundtrack. One of the most striking things about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is that it goes a long way in showing just how incredibly well the classic gameplay has held up two decades since its inception. It’s fast-paced, the controls are excellently responsive, and the levels and goals have been designed in a way to make every single level incredibly replayable. There’s no simulation here you hit buttons to pull off tricks, and try to land on your wheels rather than on your face.
If you never really played a Tony Hawk game before and rather cut your teeth on EA’s Skate series, the gameplay’s going to feel incredibly different.
